About us

Ex-X is a UKRI Natural Environment Research Council ‘Large Grant’. The team consists of researchers from five UK Universities with the University of Bristol as the lead organisation. Because we are working in the Eastern Caribbean, our key partner agencies are the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). The first two agencies are responsible for monitoring the volcanoes of the English-speaking Caribbean and IPGP the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. There are also volcanoes in the Dutch Eastern Caribbean and so they are also a project partner.

We also have project partners in Italy, USA Germany and other Universities in the UK. These are researchers with experience in the Eastern Caribbean and/or working at the cutting edge of their science in this domain.

We are taking geophysical, volcanological and modelling-based approaches in four different areas: eruptive processes; conduit dynamics; coupled models and ‘end-to-end’ applications. We will begin the project making fundamental advances in our disciplines, moving on to make advances through multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration.
